Apologies to those giving a gentle nudge. I've been really busy, honest! The Book! Okay so way back in the spring the book went out to about half a dozen of the big publishers. The agent's plan was to put it out to a few, see what the feedback was and if it was positive then hit another half dozen.
The feedback was pretty good. I recall three out of six of the editors said they loved it but were gutted because the marketing department for various reasons ranging from 'already have our new thriller writer for this year to 'it's too tough a market right now for literary thrillers'. How much of that is bullshit that really means 'didn't like it enough' I'll never know.
One said they didn't like it and one we never heard back from ever.
But that was enough for the agent to send it out to another 8 publishers. To me this is quite a long time ago and I tend not to look back but I recall about 4 positive feedbacks going from ' 'I loved the story and characters but didn't like the location' to 'He is a remarkable talent with a fantastic book and it is with the deepest regret that I can't convince the marketing department that ,,,, etc (okay I remembered that one)
Again, how much of that is bullshit I don't know.
I think two didn't like it but didn't really give any feedback and two never replied.
I'm not one for flogging a dead horse, and my agent seems convinced that though this might not be book 1 it will sell eventually. Or in plain English, get another away and suddenly it's good enough to sell.
Being a writer and therefore by definition having a mental disfunction, I started book 2. Unfortunately, as anyone who has read my meanderings is aware, I've joined the ranks of those working for a living after ten years of pissing words on paper for pay, so book 2 is slow going. In my work I'm pissing more words on paper but the job satisfaction isn't quite the same and the hours are considerably longer. I work in the City so by the time I get home I'm pretty much either fucked or drunk, neither of which is conducive to good writing.
Anyway, that's the state of play. No mega deal for the book I spent months writing, but am I discouraged? Nah.
I spent years as a screenwriter and so spent many cumulative months on various projects that never saw the light of day. It's all subjective. Right time. right place, right person.
As writers you know that my way will be 'as soon as I get a deal the City can go screw itself.'
It's the way it always will be for writers. We're cursed, and God bless us for it.

Self-publishing with Amazon?
John Rogers linked to this on his kung fu monkey blog the other day and there may be some food for thought there for you:

Writing for a living in the City - I remember the days - a good living but not much of a life...
Hope you can extricate yourself soon, and keep posting your news...
LOL... Good luck am sure your book will see the light :) Btw read your profile and i just simply have to quip here "all the leaves are brown and the sky is grey..."
Have you considered putting a wizard in the story? Could you make it about school children?
Thanks for the update - looking forward to reading this book or the next one!

Best of luck with the slog. Keep making time for the writing; it'll happen. Right time, right place, right person. ... As always.
I'm a writer, too, in America....and in my experience (and from what a friend who's an editor tells me -- she even wrote a blog post called something like Rejection Letters 101, giving her standard rejection letters and what they really mean), the actual words in a rejection letter are in code. You might want to read the post--or I can summarize it with: if she gives detailed criticism and says she'd be happy to read it again if you rewrote and resubmitted, she really does see promise in the ms.....and if she says she'd like to see more from you, she likes your writing. Everything else is just no....sigh. And yes, it totally sucks to be a writer unless you have an independent income--and even then, it probably does. It really IS a tough market and agents here say that mss. that would have sold in a week a few years ago aren't selling at all....
Hello, you have a nice blog,I like it! really nice you made a good job ;)

A blessed curse indeed. I’ve just started blogging about my own manic break and hospitalization. It’s about recovery and treatment, but more importantly about discovery of a new post-religion faith where there is no hell, no original sin, you are God, and heaven on earth is real, radiant and right around the corner. A wild and triumphant ride. http://graduatingfromgod.blogspot.com/
This is the first time I've read your blog. I have been somewhat remiss in posting on my own but have decided to get back on track and also read other writer's blogs. I think it's encouraging to keep in contact with like-minded people. I'll try to take some time to read more soon.

As long as you enjoy writing do not worry about how long it takes to write a book - just enjoy what you do and life will take care of the rest.
Welcome to my blog

HI Dave, real shame about the book, but it sounds as if you came very close. Your agents right, put that one away in the drawer and get on with the next one.
I'm one of the lucky ones - I didn't realise how lucky - who got a deal and I'm now writing my sixth/seventh book. I started a blog to record my experiences when the book was going to be published about two and a half years ago.

Some of it sounds like pompous bullshit now, but it's how I felt at the time. I gave up the day job a year past July and if I have one piece of advice it's that its at least three times harder to make a living out of being a writer than you think it's going to be
... but I've never regretted it for a single minute
writers have a mental disfunction! HAHAHAHAHA, good thing I'm not a real writer.
Where have ya been man? Crank up the writing engine! :)

Just found you by clicking on Next Blog and there you were! I'm a writer too and I SO relate! I have an agent, had two who wanted to represent the book, but my agent has been unable to sell it. I want this book in the world so I am doing it myself. My agent understands, as she too wants it to be in the world! I am publishing it through Createspace at Amazon.com. We are just getting started but they have been terrific so far. I'm following you now, follow me to see how it goes?
Nice to meet you.

Continue your work and passion. It takes dedication and persistence.
Good luck to you. I am an artist and a missionary friend and myself have decided to publish our own books. We have done 3 and the 4th will be on Amazon in Oct. I was amazed at what you actually get per book. It sells for $12.00 and I think we get around $1.50 each. I talked to someone who has done books for 20 years, and she said you have to do it for the love not the money. We hope to do at least 10 more in the series. So good luck in your book ,hope all goes well. Kathy

I enjoyed reading your posts! I want to be an author, but don't know exactly what kind of stuff you have to do to get there. I have had people tell me that publishers are very hard to get on your side.

I have opted for self-publishing through Barnes and Noble Pubit. I have written three novels in a fantasy adventure series, and am working on the fourth.
Is my course a good one? I wait to see. Like so many or your respondents, I am seeking a venue for promoting my works, as well as seeing what others may be up to.
My works are listed in the Barnes and Noble catalog, online. Just search by my name.
Hello there,
Good to be here, great content you have got down here. Hope to come back again.

I love reading your blog because it gives so much insight. I'm not a writer myself, but I think we all have moments where we feel we are under-exposed and under-appreciated for our potential. Best of luck! =)

(I was #3 reply when you first posted this.)
So the Mayans say we're all going to die this year, but for tradition sake I decided to write up goals just in case the Mayans were wrong.
So I present my goals for 2012:
1) Read. A lot.
I was able to get 57 read this year and I hope to come close to that again in '12. I don't think I'm going to try and top 57 though. If I do, fine, but I'm not going to kill myself (see goal #8). I just want to try and read some every day.
2) Finish edits for Beneath a Broken Sky.
This one is actually very achievable, because I'm almost done. I just wasn't able to get it done in December. This makes a nice easy thing for my list too :-) I like easy.
3) Edit Dagen's story and get it out to beta readers
I really need to come up with a title for this story. The first draft of it is done. Hopefully in the revisions I can find the perfect title.
4) Finish writing 1 1/2 - 2 more novels
I've already got an idea for a sequel to Dagen's story and I possibly have another I can finish. I don't want to commit to getting 2 novel length stories done because I always seem to run into NaNoWriMo and it breaks my stride.
5) Survive NaNoWriMo
And speaking of NaNoWriMo, unless thing's change, 2012 will be my last NaNoWriMo. Both as an ML and as a participant. I love NaNo. I think it's a wonderful idea and it attracts lovely people, but to tell you the truth I think I've out grown it. I've written a couple novels outside of November, I know I have the discipline to write everyday on my own. I don't need the pressure of NaNo to get me to the finish.
I also like my pattern of writing/editing. I write book B while book A is sitting cooling. Then when book B is done, I go back and edit book A. Then I write a new book and the cycle starts all over again. In the last two years NaNo has fallen out of step with my cycle. I really don't like writing two books back to back. I find it draining. I like going back and forth between editing and writing. To do that I need to be on my own schedule, and November just doesn't fit.
6) Stop fussing over the &@^! blog
I like this blog, but it's driving me a little crazy. Sometimes I just can't come up with two or three posts a week to put up here. And I refuse to put up "filler" stuff. I'm sick of fretting over that. It's just not with the time I spend fussing over it (see goal #8). Especially when I could be spending that creative energy working on my next story.
So I'll be putting up posts when I feel like it. My tentative goal is two or three times a month. I might do more. I might do less.
7) Clean the house more then once every three months
Actually my house isn't quite that bad (mostly). This is more of a balance related goal. I tend to get so focused on one thing that I totally forget everything else. So this year I want to try and keep my life more balanced. I've already started doing this, but I want to continue it through the next year.
8) No Stress (This should really be #1)
This is my over all goal. If a certain activity/person stresses me out, I really need to evaluate if it/they are worth my time and mental energy. The answer will probably be no. Life is just too short to put up with people and things that stress me out and drain my energy.
And I think that's about it. I'm sure I'll come up with something else later, but this is enough for now.
Happy New Years everyone!
Here are the details:
Our mission is to change the world, one story at a time. We allow anyone to post a story on the site, but we also hand select key writers, bloggers, and experts to feature at the top of every stage page beneath the Editor's welcome. We feature the "best of the best" writers in these top sections of each page.
• Our "Featured Bloggers" are either writing a fresh pieces for the site (frequency is up to them). They can also repost one of their personal blogs updates on the site that may be a good fit for Stage of Life, e.g. you are specifically talking about a key stage of life moment in your blog one day, so you could repost that on Stage of Life to reach more people (just tweak it so the story can stand alone as a solo essay).
• The Featured Bloggers are allowed to link back to their blogs from the posts they make on Stage of Life since our mission to promote our Featured Bloggers.
• On your end, our hope is that you would mention you're a Featured Writer on your blog or talk about us once in a while.
• There's no financial exchange between us and at the end of the day, you can upload a Featured Story from your blog to our site daily, weekly, monthly, or whenever you want.
• I also personally keep the Featured Blogger team updated on our site growth, traffic stats, appearances of us in the press (our news releases have recently been getting picked up on CNBC.com, FoxBusiness.com, Forbes.com, etc.).
We'd love to feature your writing, your blog and your experience on Stage of Life. Let me know what you think.
If you're interested, I'll send you next steps on how to upload your material to it's featured on the site.
